Thane: The Centre is planning to connect the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport with adjoining Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan and Vasai, Union minister for road transport & highways, shipping & water resources Nitin Gadkari said at the foundation laying ceremony of two road improvement projects in Thane district on Thursday afternoon.
The Mumbai metropolitan region has an over 150km-long shoreline, which has been underutilized. The minister said his department was mulling water routes from neighbouring suburbs to the airport and said a viability and feasibility survey had shown positive results, making it possible to introduce routes even before the airport was ready, using hovercraft, catamarans and seaplanes. The state and central governments have planned several road and railway links to the upcoming facility.
