60% of IAF fleet is over 30 years old, says aviation historian

Hyderabad: City-based defence and aviation historian, KS Nair, said that 60% of the Indian Air Force fleet is over 30 years old, because of which technical snag crashes happen regularly. Except for Sukhois, most of the fleet has ageing aircraft.
Nair said, "On Tuesday, people were elated after hearing news of aerial strikes on terror camps at Balakot, Pakistan. However, the joy turned into grief on Wednesday morning after people heard the news of losing an aircraft. We also lost an Mi-17 chopper in Budgam. It is likely one more crash in the long line of losses the Indian Air Force has suffered. This will continue as long as its 25 and 35-year-old pilots are forced to fly 35 to 45 year old aircraft."

Nair said, "A lot has been said and written about MiG-21 and its reputation for being unreliable. But the IAF's problems go well beyond MiG-21. About 60% of IAF's combat fleet is well over 30 years old. The Indian public, while applauding the government's expenditure on the Statue of Unity and the National War Memorial, might do the Indian soldier (and especially the Indian pilots) a favour by pressing the government to undertake a programme on modernisation."
