AAI plans tunnel to terminal to be built between runways

Chennai: Airports Authority of India has started paperwork to build a tunnel connecting the main terminal buildings of the city airport with a satellite terminal proposed to be built in the space between the two runways.
Sources said a consultant would be appointed soon to ensure that the project was feasible and also to appoint a contractor to design and build the tunnel to the terminal, which was being planned in the middle of the airfield so that the passenger handling capacity of the airport can be increased.

A senior official of AAI said the tender was floated to find a consultant who would be responsible for a feasibility study and for identifying a contractor to do the work. The tunnel will connect the proposed integrated terminal, which is being built between the domestic and international terminals, to the satellite terminal.
“Provision is given for connecting the tunnel to the new terminal which will be ready in 42 months. The new contractor will be building it after the terminal is ready,” said a senior official who asked not to be named. The project is being started now so that it can be integrated into the airport expansion plans.
