AAI to extend, strengthen runway at Tirupati airport

Tirupati: In a bid to enable the operations of wider body aircrafts at the Tirupati international airport, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is mulling to extend and strengthen the existing runway from 2,286 mtrs to 3,810 mtrs, which can cater for code E aircrafts, said M. Siva Raju, director.

Addressing mediapersons in Tirupati on Monday, the director announced that the vice-president of India

M. Venkaiah Naidu would lay foundation stone for the proposed extension of runway at Tirupati airport, during his visit on February 20.

On the salient features of runway extension work, Mr. Siva Raju explained that recarpeting and strengthening of the runway was listed under the proposed works and in addition,  other associated works like grading of runway strips, RESA, GLF works to meet the ICAO standards for Code-E type aircrafts was also included in the project. The AAI sanctioned an amount of Rs 177.10 crore to take up the works”, he explained.
