Bank fined for not giving promised vouchers with credit card

Chandigarh: Making false promises to give vouchers of Jet Airways on opting for a credit card has cost Indus land bank dear. Following a complaint by sector 53 Kajheri resident, district consumer disputes redressal forum directed the bank to pay up Rs 12,000 for causing harassment. They were also directed to give Jet Airways vouchers amounting to Rs 50,000 as were promised in the offer.

Hardass Singla had stated in his complaint that on the allurement of the representatives of the bank, he opted for Signature Credit Card and paid Rs 57,500 on February 27, 2017. According to the complainant, on opting for the said credit card, he was to get vouchers of Rs.50,000 redeemable on Jet Airways. It was alleged that he received the Credit Card in question but did not receive the aforesaid vouchers. He visited the bank a number of times, but only false promises were given to him, he said. When the complainant was not provided the vouchers, he served a legal notice on May 17, 2018 on the bank, but to no success.

No one appeared on behalf of the bank authorities to contest the case and it was proceeded ex-parte.

Taking note the forum held that “Significantly, Bank authorities did not appear to contest the claim of the complainant and preferred to proceed against ex-parte. This act of the bank draws an adverse inference against them. The non-appearance of anyone shows that they have nothing to say in their defense against the allegations made by the complainant. Therefore, the assertions of the complainant go unrebutted and uncontroverted.”
