Boeing seeks access to KIA second runway

Bengaluru: Boeing, which is setting up a large engineering and technology centre in the aerospace park adjacent to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Devanahalli, is said to be seeking access to the under-construction second runway to conduct tests. However, sources say the move has hit a legal hurdle.
The engineering centre, coming up on 36 acres of land, will be the largest outside the US. Boeing is said to have placed the request for an exclusive access from the centre to the runway within days of receiving the clearance to set it up.

“Boeing had, in fact, sought land adjacent to the airport as their research activity requires access to the airport,” said a senior official in the Karnataka government, which holds 13% stake in the Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL).

He said the company is seeking direct access for their men and material for projects, which are confidential in nature. “Later, it may seek to use the runway for testing military and civilian aircraft,” said the official. The runway is expected to be completed by June this year.
The official, however, said if BIAL signs an agreement with Boeing, there are concerns that other companies setting up operations in the aerospace park may also ask for similar agreements.
