Exit of airlines upsets flyers

Thiruvananthapuram: The exit of Saudia and flydubai from the Thiruvananthapuram international airport and the curtailment of its international and domestic flights by Jet Airways owing to financial crunch are worrying flyers from the southern districts of the State.

With the reduction in the number of flights to West Asia, the options available to flyers have come down and airfare has gone up, especially to destinations in Europe. Many Non-Resident Keralites in Doha, Muscat, Dammam and cities in Saudi Arabia have been hit.

Flyers from the southern districts are now forced to travel via the Cochin international airport to Europe. Destinations to Europe via Cochin are cheaper by ₹10,000 when compared to the fare from Thiruvananthapuram.

Citing bilateral seat arrangement issues, the Jeddah-based Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines, the national carrier of Saudi Arabia) has withdrawn its three weekly flights started with fanfare to the State capital in 2017. The Dubai-based low-cost carrier flydubai has also pulled out its three weekly flights to and from Dubai.
The exit of Saudia and flydubai from here benefits the Calicut international airport, as the two carriers have commenced operations to Kozhikode. Jet Airways, the country’s largest private full service carrier, has withdrawn its international flights from here to Doha, Muscat and Dammam, and to Bengaluru in the domestic sector. Currently, Jet Airways operates two flights daily to Mumbai from here.
