IAF warns admin of bird strike on commercial flights

Barelly: Alerting the district administration of bird menace at Trishul airbase here, Indian Air Force (IAF) authorities have shot off a letter to district magistrate VK Singh, requesting him to get trees along the approach road to the under construction Nath Nagari civil enclave pruned. IAF officials further stated that they had requested the forest department to prune the trees, but no action was taken.

In his letter to the DM, Chief administrative officer Group Captain Shivanand said IAF have already adopted effective measures to control bird menace for its operations, which are necessary for the safe conduct of commercial flights as well. “Bird menace is one of the major impediments for safe flight operations at any airfield. There are certain tall trees on the approach path of runway which are erected outside the boundary of IAF airbase. These trees are nesting places for birds. Immense bird activities in the airfield can lead to bird hit causing damage to aircraft and serious threat to passengers and crews,” the letter reads.

According to IAF officials, their training flights can be regulated considering the bird activities, but it’s not possible for commercial flights, because its timings cannot be changed frequently. “It may hit the operation of flights and poses a threat to the passengers’ safety,” said Group Captain, requesting the DM to take necessary steps on priority basis.

After receiving the letter, the DM directed the special land acquisition officer (SLAO) to immediately look into the matter and take appropriate steps in coordination with the forest department and IAF.

SLAO Sultan Ahmed Siddiqi said, “I will talk to forest department officials on Friday to ensure all trees earmarked by the IAF are pruned at the earliest.”
