IndiGo to cut 30 flights daily till March-end due to pilot shortage

New Delhi: Low-cost carrier IndiGo will curtail 2% of its schedule, roughly 30 flights daily, till March-end. The normal schedule is now expected to operate with the summer schedule in April.

IndiGo has been cancelling flights due to crew rostering issues since last weekend with 76 flights being cancelled each last Saturday and Sunday. On Wednesday, it cancelled 49 flights. The airline is facing a pilot shortage, say sources. Its cancellations come at a time when Jet Airways is already doing the same due to a severe financial crunch.

A senior regulatory official monitoring the IndiGo situation said: “IndiGo has informed us that the hailstorm in North India, especially Delhi, of last Friday led to a number of its pilots operating for two nights in a row due to which they had to be given mandatory rest period. This affected rostering and led to flight cancellations.”
In a statement, IndiGo said Wednesday it had informed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) about cancelling 49 flights on Wednesday after giving one to two days’ prior notice in order to re-accommodate passengers on flights at a similar time as booked. “The cancellations on (Feb 13) were caused by several factors like anticipated weather conditions on (Feb 14) and NOTAMS (notice to airmen) at various airports. This resulted in extended duty times which then made it necessary to re-roster our crew and optimize our operations,” the airline said.
