Scores celebrate their ‘serious hobby’

Bengaluru: Flying model planes had been a decades-old hobby for them, but on Thursday model jets and planes got space alongside their bigger counterparts.

Raghavendra B.S. has been flying planes since 1999, and his propeller-driven plane touched speeds of 120 km an hour in the warm, windy skies during Aero India. “...I am happy we got a chance to showcase our skills at Aero India... What people do not understand is that these model planes aren’t toys. If handled by untrained people, they can be a threat to those on the ground and, on these kind of speeds, fatally injure people,” he said.

His skills are much sought after, with the Indian Institute of Science often calling him to test their Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

Adarsh, who enthralled the meagre audience gathered for the Drone Olympics with his mini-jet engine Xcaliber plane, started developing model planes in 1998. By 2009, it had become a full-time profession, with his expertise even being used by the DRDO to test UAVs. The plane, which cost him ₹11 lakh, can reach a top speed of 350 kmph.
