Slow scanning, insufficient staff delay baggage delivery at international terminal

Chennai:  Passengers arriving on international flights at night face an inordinate delay in getting their luggage at the terminal due to a shortage in airlines and ground handling staff and the time taken by customs personnel manning the scanning machines in the baggage area.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) said it is taking steps to ensure that these delays are curbed as they affect passengers’ perception of the airport. Baggage handling was one of the problem areas that featured in the airport service quality survey held recently.

Passengers often wait for an hour or two at the carousel for bags at the international terminal. And many take to Twitter to vent their ire. Recently, the bags of passengers of two flights were sent on one baggage conveyor belt.

Workers engaged by the airline or a ground handling company transport bags from the aircraft using trolleys to the baggage make up area, where bags are segregated and distributed to the assigned conveyor belt. The bags are scanned before they make their way to the moving conveyor. A senior AAI official said congestion, for which airlines are responsible, is one of the reasons baggage arrives late at the conveyor.

Since the airport receives wide-body international flights back-to-back, congestion is a common sight. An increase in red eye flights at the domestic terminal also adds to air-side congestion. “Bringing bags from aircraft parked in four remote bays also takes time,” he said.
