Srinagar airfare halts return of Kashmiri kids

Mohali: As many as 80 Kashmiri students are struggling to arrange airfare for Srinagar even as 40 others managed to reach home on Monday, two days after they were forced to leave Dehradun and Mullana in Ambala following threats after the Pulwama terror attack.
Jammu and Kashmir Students Organisation (JKSO) president Khwaja Itrat said, “We are finding it hard to arrange for airfare. Airlines are charging Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 for a Chandigarh-Srinagar ticket and we fear going by trains. We are now planning to charter a flight to fly 250 to 300 students expected to reach Mohali by Tuesday.”
Currently, Chandigarh has two connecting flights to Srinagar. GoAir flight originating from Ahmedabad halts at Chandigarh before proceeding to Srinagar and IndiGo flight originating from Kolkata has a brief halt at Chandigarh and then proceeds for Srinagar. An airline operator at the Chandigarh airport said, “The airfare escalates if bookings are sought at the last minute. As the flight gets full, the airfare escalates manifold.”
In Srinagar, many organisations and residents are giving donations and other help so that the stranded students may reach home. Mursal Banday, another JKSO volunteer, said he has flown to Srinagar to hold talks with the deputy commissioner and organisations for arranging help to bring students back home.
Itrat said fearing for their lives, many students have left Dehradun and Mullana to reach here in Landran. He also met deputy commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra requesting her to provide security to the students. Sapra said, “We have assured them full co-operation and directed all three SDMs and SSP to provide security cover whenever demanded. There are 80 students here. The DSP has been directed to escort the students safely to the borders of the state whenever a demand is raised, without wasting any time.”
