The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) made a come back on Saturday, flying for the first time in the ongoing Aero India 2019. A seven aircraft formation team, apart from doing various manoeuvres, also paid tribute to their late colleague Wing Commander Sahil Gandhi, who sustained fatal injuries following a crash on February 19.
The performance by the SKATs drew applause from the large crowd at the Air Force Station Yelahanka, the venue of the air show.
The SKAT are a nine-aircraft display team. They always perform with nine aircraft, but as they lost two aircraft during the crash, they could perform only with seven on Saturday. On February 19, two Hawk aircraft of SKAT crashed close to Yelahanka Air Force base while they were carrying out a practice run for the Aero India 2019.
Out of the three aircrew of the aircraft, Wing Commander VT Shelke and Squadron Leader TJ Singh were ejected. However, Wing Commander Sahil Gandhi sustained fatal injuries. The two air crew have been airlifted to Air Force Command Hospital, Bengaluru, the IAF had said in a statement after the crash.
