Two Surya Kiran aircraft crash during practice at Aero India in Bengaluru, one pilot dead

Bengaluru: Two Surya Kiran aircraft collided into each other and crashed moments after that at about 11.50am while practicing for the 12th edition of Aero India here on Tuesday. One pilot has been confirmed dead, while two others have sustained injuries.

The Surya Kiran aerobatic team has been an eye-catcher at multiple Aero India shows and has recently upgraded to flying the Hawk aircraft. They earlier flew the Kiran trainer aircraft, which has been decommissioned by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

“Today morning at around 11.50am, two Hawk aircraft of Surya Kiran aerobatic team of IAF crashed while practicing for the Aero India Air Show. Three pilots were occupants. Two pilots ejected and have been evacuated to the Command Hospital. Third pilot sustained fatal injuries. Damage to life and property in the vicinity of crash site is being ascertained,” IAF spokesperson said in a statement.

While the IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry (COI), which will investigate the cause of the accident, eye-witnesses accounts and videos show that one of the planes’ nose collided into the other, making it very difficult to recover for the pilots.

The rest of the Surya Kiran team (seven aircraft) landed in HAL airport and has been based there for now. While all Surya Kiran aircraft (Hawk) are twin seaters, the team generally flies with one pilot. On Tuesday, one of the aircraft had two pilots in them, both of whom ejected to safe.

“One of the pilots has fractures on both his legs and has been shifted to the operating theatre, while some scans are being performed on the other,” a source said. The third pilot’s body is yet to be brought to Command hospital. Once it reaches there, a post mortem would be performed and the body will be handed over to the family.
