IndiGo international passenger numbers swell 48% in 2018, pips Air India Express to become 4th largest

New Delhi: Budget carrier IndiGo pipped Air India Express to become the fourth-largest international player in India last year, a Times of India report said. The Gurgaon-based company added one plane every week in 2018 due to which its overseas passenger number grew 48% to 4.18 lakh from 28.3 lakh in 2017, putting behind Air India Express, which remained at the fifth spot, the ToI report mentioned.

India saw 6.3 crore international passengers in 2018, registering a growth of 7.3% over 2017, when 5.9 crore passengers flown in and out of India. Jet Airways continued to remain at the top spot although the number of passengers carried in 2018 came down to 1.06 crore as against 1.11 crore in 2017. Financial troubles coupled with the downsizing of partner Etihad led to the drop in Jet Airways' passenger number.
Meanwhile, Air India and Air India Express together closed their gap with the market leader and flew just 20,000 passengers less than what Jet Airways carried in 2018. For the first time last year, Air India and Air India Express carried more than 1 crore international passengers, the daily added.

SpiceJet improved its position in 2018 by moving two spots higher to seven. It overtook Qatar Airways and Oman Air for international travel to and from India last year. Similarly, GoAir, the sixth Indian carrier to start flying abroad, saw 42,478 international passengers last year.

In 2018, Indian carriers accounted for 40% of the international passengers to and from India, up from 38.6% in 2017, the ToI report said.
