Jewar airport project in a limbo as farmers move court

Jewar: With a few days left for the announcement of dates for the general elections, the much-awaited Jewar airport project is in a limbo.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to lay the foundation stone of the project before the implementation of the model code of conduct, several farmers have moved the court demanding compensation four times the circle rate.

At present, the government is giving compensation two times of the circle rate. "We will not leave our fertile land for peanuts. Take a look around, you will find vast green farms and nothing else. How can this area become a city overnight? There are no colleges, no hospitals, then what kind of city is this," said Ranbeer Singh, a resident of Jewar.

A majority of villagers are demanding more compensation but all of them are not against the construction of airport. Bijendra Singh of Rohi village claimed that the problem in airport project is created by some of the farmers who have a plenty of money and time to waste. "A majority of farmers here are needy. They want to give their land for the airport on whatever price the government offers. But those who have money and time are not only disturbing the project by moving the court but also provoking other farmers to demand more compensation," he said.
