Man detained at Jaipur airport for smuggling 583 gms of gold

Jaipur: A man was detained at Jaipur International Airport by the customs department for allegedly smuggling 583 grams of gold in an LED light. Ganpat Sharma, a resident of Nepal was on the flight from Sharjah to Jaipur and was carrying the gold in form of biscuits.

Sharma was in the Air Arabia flight which landed in Jaipur on Sunday morning. The gold was detected in the halogen tubes during luggage screening. This is the third time in just a fortnight that the customs department has caught people smuggling gold from overseas.

According to the data available with the customs department, after a brief hiatus in 2017, at least 18 to 19kg of gold was seized by sleuths of customs in 2018, which was worth nearly Rs seven crore in the Indian market. Two weeks back, a man was arrested from smuggling over half kg gold in his rectum while returning from Bangkok. Another one was detained just a week back for smuggling around 200 grams of gold.
