Mock anti-hijack exercise conducted at Vizag airport

Visakhapatnam: With the objective to test the efficacy of contingency plans and procedures to deal with hijack threats and subsequent evacuation, an anti-hijack and mass casualty evacuation drill was conducted at Visakhapatnam airport by INS Dega.
Marine Commandos (Marcos), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Security Guard, Airport Authority of India and state government agencies participated in the drill. The hijack exercise was conducted with a mock situation created for initiating coordinated actions by various stakeholders from the navy, the airport and other central and state government agencies.
 As part of the exercise, a scenario of inbound aircraft pilot reporting a possible hijack by about seven armed men to the Duty Air Traffic Control Officer of Visakhapatnam airport and his intentions of making an emergency landing at Visakhapatnam airport was simulated.
On landing, the aircraft was shifted to an isolated bay away from the main terminal. The quick reaction team of INS Dega and CISF were immediately deployed till the arrival of NSG and Marcos.
