Budget carrier SpiceJet’s decision to make in-flight announcements about scores and updates from IPL matches has not gone down well with the pilots, who fear that such announcements by them will distract them from their primary flying duty and endanger flight safety.
Rajnish Bhalla, Deputy Chief Pilot, Line Operations of Boeing 737 aircraft, sent out an email to all SpiceJet pilots, asking them to start making the IPL announcements on the 4 pm and 8 pm flights for “cricket loving Spicejetters” from Tuesday evening. The announcements will be made on 134 flights till May 5.
“The captain is required to ensure at least one announcement is made in flights less than 60 minutes and at least two announcements in flights more than one hour. Announcement is not required for international flights,” said Bhalla’s email, which also contained a schedule of 4 pm and 8 pm matches, and a sample announcement sheet.
The sample announcement from the pilots will mention the teams playing, the stadium name, who won the toss and chose to bat or bowl and what is the score after so many overs. These updates would be provided by the dispatch team on the ground through VHF sets and will be manned by an exclusive staff, who will radio it when the pilots ask for updates, the email said.
The captain will also have to sign a debriefing sheet, mentioning the time and the flights where the announcements are made.
Objecting to the directives, a SpiceJet pilot said, “Pilots are always under pressure. For their commercial interests, the company is forcing pilots to make unnecessary announcements, affecting the flight safety and distracting the captain from flying.”
