Kolkata: Security was stepped up at Kolkata airport on Saturday afternoon after the Home ministry issued a high alert following intelligence inputs on unspecified terror strike at Indian airports in the wake of the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan.
Deployment of CISF personnel was doubled at entrances to the terminals as well as exits to ensure that only bonafide flyers gained entry into facility. While two CISF jawans usually check tickets and ID of passengers at each entrance, four jawans were deployed from 3pm on Saturday. While one additional person will keep a tab on flyers to ensure that none slip by without furnishing necessary documents, the second person will be armed for combat in case a terrorist attempts to barge in. Entry of visitors has been banned.
Inside the terminal, over two dozen plainclothes personnel have been deployed to scan passengers on the move. At security check point, passengers are being asked to remove shoes that are being passed through the scanner. For registered bag X-ray, CISF has asked airline security persons to be more careful. A second layer of manual baggage check has been introduced at the boarding gate to ensure nothing slips through.
