Surat airport authorities wake up to power capacity enhancement

Surat: Surat airport authorities have written to Gujarat Government for taking up immediate enhancement of electricity capacity keeping in mind proposed extension of terminal building.
TOI had in an article on March 13 highlighted the problems faced at Surat airport due to frequent power disruption, affecting smooth operation of flight services.
Electricity to Surat airport is supplied by Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL). Earlier, power consumption at airport was less due to operation of one or two flights in a day. However, power consumption at the airport has increased three fold with operation of 27 flights in a day and
increase in passenger traffic from 20,000 to more than 1.45 lakh.
In a letter to roads and building department in August 2018, Surat airport officials stated that present load of electricity at the airport was 1,200 KAV and that the proposed requirement of power after the extension of the terminal building will be 2,200 KAV. The airport will be requiring about 1,000 KAV of additional power supply for the smooth operation of the airport.
