Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has set the ball rolling for the second greenfield airport proposed near the city, by issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) to appoint a consultant for preparing a draft report and identify three potential sites near the city for the project, which was mooted seven years ago.
Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa while releasing Tamil Nadu’s vision 2023 document in 2012 said that nearly ₹20,000 crore will be invested in the greenfield project to handle annually around 40 million passengers. The second airport then was proposed in the auto cluster of Sriperumbudur, about 40 km west of Chennai, spanning 4,800 acres. The feasibility report is with the State government. However, since then, discussions have been going on between the Centre and the State to identify the land for the project. With Chennai airport’s air travel growing annually at 15 to 20 per cent, a greenfield airport will be required in 7-8 years — the same time frame that will be required to build a greenfield airport, said a senior official at Chennai airport.
According to the RFP issued by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco), the State has four international airports (Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli and Madurai) and two domestic airports (Tuticorin and Salem). The Chennai airport is the fourth busiest airport in the country, handling 20.36 million passengers in 2017-18. It constituted a 6.7-per cent share in India’s total aircraft movement in 2017-18, and recorded a 16.3 per cent growth in terms of freight handling.
In order to increase its passenger and freight handling capacity, the State government intends to develop the greenfield airport near Chennai, with Tidco appointed as the nodal agency to select a consultant to preparing a draft project report, which will include recommendations regarding location, land requirement, technical specifications, project structuring, project financing and bid management.
