Two foreigners with drones held at Chennai airport, let off after checks

Chennai: Two foreigners were stopped at Chennai airport in the early hours of Monday in separate incidents after undeclared drones were found in their checked-in baggage.

After questioning by immigration officials and an all-clear from officials of the respective embassies, Vemoe Venkai, 40, of Belgium, and Martin Aakre, 45, of Norway left the country on Tuesday night.

While Venkai, who arrived in New Delhi on a tourist visa 14 days ago was to fly out to Abu Dhabi on an Etihad flight, Aakre, a tourist who landed in Mumbai 18 days ago, was to leave to Bangkok.

The prevailing tension over the past few days in areas bordering India and Pakistan and specific alert from central intelligencies about plans of terrorists to hijack aicraft from India has led to heightened security at airports and officials at Chennai airport were double checking baggage when they found neatly-packed drones in the baggage of the two foreigners.

While one drone was a foot long, the other was a quarter of a foot in length and both had the wings open.

Immigration officials seized the drones, cancelled their travel from Chennai to the respective destinations and the two men were taken to a quarantined room.
