As cargo handling rises, Trichy airport gets more gear

Trichy: Following a steady growth in cargo consignments at the international airport, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has procured Ground Support Equipment (GSE) such as trolleys and reusable plastic pallets for facilitating export activity at the Trichy international airport.

A senior airport official said a total of 15 reusable plastic pallets and 20 cargo trolleys have been procured from Delhi. The pallet is a horizontal platform device used as a base for transporting, handling, storing and assembling both products and materials as a unit load. Pallets are designed to ensure that no damage occurs to the goods inside when another pallet is loaded on top of it, officials said.

The cargo terminal at the airport has recorded a growth of 8.74% compared to the previous year’s cargo consignments which has helped AAI realize Rs 1.55 crore as revenue during the 2018-19 financial year, airport officials said. As the terminal handled 71.77 lakh kilograms of (7177 tonnes) of cargo, total foreign remittance was expected to be not less than Rs 42 crore, observers say.
