Cleared: Night landing on Hyderabad airport’s second runway

Hyderabad: Joining the big league of New Delhi and Mumbai, Hyderabad’s international airport too will now have night landing operations on its second runway, following clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The standby secondary runway, was upgraded to this status from a parallel taxiway in 2012.

Apart from the city’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), only four other facilities in India —Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi — have more than one runway.

“The DGCA recently accorded clearance following a series of trial landings and take-offs carried out over a period of time. Capable of handling large aircraft such as Boeing 747 jumbo jets, the secondary runway will be used as a back-up during non-availability of main runway,” said an airport official.

This comes as a huge relief for airline operators, servicing RGIA during the night hours.

Incidentally, in March 2018, operations at RGIA took a severe beating after tyres of a Tirupati-Hyderabad Indigo aircraft burst on landing.

With the primary runway being forced to shut down for over four hours, more than 30 flights (domestic and international) had to be diverted to other airports in the country even as a dozen-odd services were either cancelled or inordinately delayed.
