Elderly couple struggle to get wheelchair help at airport

Chennai: If you are a senior citizen planning to take a flight this summer, better pre-book a wheelchair with the airlines. Two senior citizens who booked their tickets on a Chennai –– Mumbai IndiGo flight learned this the hard way on Thursday as staff initially refused to offer wheelchair assistance but relented after senior officials at the airport intervened.
The reason given by the airline: The passengers did not pre-book and there were too many wheelchair passengers awaiting assistance.

Octogenarians V N Viswanathan and his wife Sundari Viswanathan missed pre-booking wheelchair assistance. Though, the airline gave them a wheelchair when requested at the terminal, the staff refused to offer assistance beyond the check-in counter. “The staff said there were about seven wheelchair passengers and that it was not possible to take more people on wheelchair till the boarding gates,” said a relative who was accompanying the couple.

Airlines provide wheelchair assistance from the terminal gate to the boarding gate. If boarding is via aerobridge, the passengers are brought till the door of the plane. If the boarding is using shuttle bus, the passenger is taken to the foot of the ramp.
