Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya on Wednesday accused the Centre of discriminating against private airlines like Jet Airways while citing its “bail out to Air India”. He also reiterated his offer to repay all dues owed by his Kingfisher Airlines to banks in India. In a series of tweets, Mallya drew parallels between debt-ridden Jet Airways, Air India and Kingfisher Airlines.
Mallya raised doubts over why so many airlines have “bitten the dust” in India. “Even though Jet [Airways] was a major competitor to Kingfisher at the time, I feel sorry to see such a large private airline on the brink of failure when the government used Rs 35,000 crore of public funds to bail out Air India,” Mallya tweeted. “Just being a public sector unit is no excuse for discrimination.”
The businessman, who is currently in the United Kingdom, claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre had wrongly charged him with criminal offences. “I invested hugely into Kingfisher [Airlines] which rapidly grew to become India’s largest and most awarded airline,” Mallya said. “True, Kingfisher borrowed from PSU Banks as well. I have offered to pay back 100% but am being criminally charged instead. Airline Karma?”
He alleged that his debtors have refused to take him up on his offer. “Every time I say that I am willing to pay 100% back to the PSU banks, the media says I am spooked, terrified, etc of extradition from the UK to India,” he tweeted. “I am willing to pay either way, whether I am in London or in an Indian jail.”
Mallya described Jet Airways as a fine airline. “Even though we were fierce competitors, my sympathies go out to Naresh and Neeta Goyal who built Jet Airways that India should be extremely proud of,” he tweeted.
