Post-election boost for Pune airport anticipated

Pune: The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC) is awaiting presentation of the full-fledged state budget after the Lok Sabha elections for any concrete development related to the Purandar airport project.
“The state government should start releasing funds in phases for the project once the elections are over. The state will meet for the budget session after the general elections. We hope funds will be allocated for the Purandar airport project then,” a senior MADC official said.
Experts said going by the pace of the project, it was unlikely to be completed by 2020 as promised. “The delay appears a calculated move. Each vote matters for political parties. Any attempt to acquire land would have been a challenge for the government at this time, which is politically crucial,” aviation analyst and expert Dhairyashil Vandekar said.
Another source said if one looked at the big picture, over 150 talukas in the state have been declared drought-hit and the farmers have been protesting against the government. “The state has seen suicide by over 12,000 farmers since 2015. The government must have realized that pushing forward the Purandar project ahead of the elections might not go down well with the Purandar farmers,” the source said.
