SACON to study bird behaviour at SVPI

Ahmedabad: As part of its bird-control measures, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has commissioned the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) to study bird sightings at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport six months ago. The study was to span two years and will include observing bird behaviour.
A senior AAI official, said, “We received an interim report a week ago, with several recommendations. We are examining them and are trying to implement them. The final report will be out after six months.”

To avoid bird strikes at the city airport, the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation had been tasked with conducting bird counts at SVPI airport, one in January and before and after the monsoon.

That decision was taken during a meetings of the Airport Environment Management Committee (AEMC). However, state government sources confirmed that no such study has been conducted in the last year. No reasons were accorded for giving the task of conducting the census to SACON either.
