To fly or not: Travellers in a spot as Jet Airways cancels flights

Coimbatore: People who have booked Jet Airways flights for business and leisure trips in advance are in a tight spot as the airlines has cancelled all flights from the city. While some of them are considering the option of cancelling trips as they have to shell out an additional 50% amount to rebook on scheduled dates, others are busy exploring ways to find alternate flights online or through travel agents. Either the case, they are equally concerned about the refund of cancelled tickets.

Travel agents, meanwhile, blamed other private airlines for looting desperate travellers in times of crisis.

Hundreds of city residents had booked Jet Airways flights to Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Paris and Dubai, among other destinations. “I had booked a Jet Airways flight to Chennai, from where I was planning to take another flight to New Delhi. I had to rebook both my flights by paying an additional Rs 1,500 to Chennai and Rs 2,100 to Delhi,” said Malini Raj, who is planning a trip abroad next week. Like him, many are forced to hike the holiday budget to reschedule their trips.

On Tuesday, flight tickets to Chennai was priced anywhere between Rs 3,000 and Rs 6,000, compared to the usual Rs 1,700-Rs 4,000. Similarly, flight tickets to Hyderabad was priced at a minimum of Rs 6,000 and tickets to Mumbai was priced upwards Rs 10,000, compared to the usual Rs 2,500-Rs 7,000.

“The problem is Jet Airways is cancelling flights in the eleventh hour without any prior notice. The call centres too are not giving proper answers, forcing us to rebook in the last minute,” P Ganesh, managing director of city-based Express Holidays, said. “The call centres do not even tell us when the cancellation money will be refunded to our account or that of our clients.”
