Jammu Airport has long been craving for the need to be upgraded though certain innovative changes have been made here and there but they appear just cosmetic in nature but widening the runway by means of an airport of bigger size to make it stand on the pedestal of modern airports is long overdue. In this connection a public interest litigation has been filed in the State High Court. The Division Bench has recently passed several directions to the State in this regard.
The State is required to provide enough land for construction of new green field airport as the Airport Authority of India is committed in this regard. Agreed ,the State cannot provide the land free of cost to the AAI , the DB has directed the State to take necessary steps expeditiously and discuss the matter with the AAI to see if sharing of cost involved could be arranged. However, it is learnt that the disbursement of compensation is already made to the owners and if there is a dispute between Government departments and Defence Estate Officer, why the same is not resolved even after 11 long years.
