Customs seizes 3kg gold worth 1 crore at Chennai airport, nine held

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai international airport on Tuesday intercepted a group of nine people and seized 3kg of gold worth 1 crore from them.
The nine landed from Colombo on a SpiceJet flight. They had concealed the gold inside their rectums. Officials identified ring leaders - Mohammad Gani, 38, and Karpagam,45.
Gani, a trader in textiles, was intercepted on his way out of the airport. On questioning, he confessed that he had concealed gold weighing 535g in his rectum. One gold ring of 25g was also recovered from him. Apart from Gani, Abbas, 41, of Perambalur, Maideen, 51, of SP Pattinam and Mohamed Rafeek, 37, of Trichy, were nabbed.
Besides gold concealed in their rectums, one gold chain of 9g was also recovered from Abbas. Besides Karpagam, four women passengers arrested were Shameem Begum, 45, Nagoor Amma, 40, both of Trichy, Srimathi, 41, of Pappanad, and Parameshwari, 55, of Vathalagundu, Madurai.
Besides gold hidden inside their rectums, 5 gold rings weighing 25g each were also recovered from them.
