Facial recognition by state police only after legal framework in place: Experts

Hyderabad: Emboldened by San Francisco, which became the first US city to ban facial recognition technology, data security experts have demanded that Telangana police use the technology only after a legal framework is put in place. They also urged the civil aviation ministry not to introduce the technology at Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport in Hyderabad and Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru in a hurry.
Sources in RGIA said facial recognition trials have been going on—a first in India—at the airport for the past few weeks. The technology, likely to be introduced in a phased manner by the end of this year, is an extension of e-boarding. RGIA handles over 60,000 passengers—both domestic and international arrivals and departures—a day.
Data security researcher Srinivas Kodali said the authorities should first work out a regulatory framework before facial recognition is introduced. “Though Aadhaar is not made mandatory, facial features and details once recognised can be misused for other purposes like secret surveillance,” he cautioned.
A senior IPS official, however, picked holes in San Francisco voting to ban facial recognition, which will not be allowed to be used by local agencies like the city’s transport authority or law enforcement. “Yes, there should be some regulation but the technology is useful in identifying missing persons and terror suspects. It also comes in handy for VIP security,” he said.
