Flights to small towns in TN to soon take off

Chennai: With the new Union government set to take over, the airlines and airports authorities hope that it will fast-track regional connectivity scheme in the state which is lagging the deadline by at least three years.
Though the Vellore, Neyveli airstrips are ready, there is no push to start flights. These towns should have been connected under phase-1 of the scheme which is set to enter phase-4. Thanjavur development is also on. Chennai-Salem is the only Udan route started in the state. However, apart from TruJet, other airlines have not shown interest.

AAI is looking at the ministry to encourage airlines to take up the route or allot it to others.

An AAI official said, “The Union government will continue to the push for Udan flights. However, more incentives may be needed to encourage low-cost carriers to take up routes. Now, they are looking only at routes that may bring them profit. This must change."
Rajeev Kale, president and country head, Thomas Cook India Limited, said, “Tamil Nadu is a key market for us, and its regional towns are gaining ground as potential for both domestic business and leisure travel; equally as a feeder to hubs for outbound travel. With schemes like Udan, we appreciate the government’s tourism-focussed initiatives to catalyze the travel and tourism sector in widening the ambit via increased accessibility and affordable air connectivity.”
