Trichy: Air intelligence unit (AIU) of Trichy international airport seized 580g of gold concealed in a gas stove brought by a passenger from Malaysia in the early hours on Friday.
The contraband was seized from a passenger Chakrabarti of Thiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district when he tried to get through the immigration check at the airport when he landed here at Trichy airport from Kuala Lumpur.
Suspecting his activities, the officials had intercepted him and checked his luggage including a brand new gas stove. The search brought to light that a golden rod was cut into eight pieces and stuffed inside the gas pipes of the stove.
The officials said that the total value of the gold was Rs 18.50 lakhs. The team was interrogating the passenger as to where the consignment was intended to.
