IndiGo corners 50 per cent of market share

Low cost carrier IndiGo now holds close to 50 per cent of India’s aviation market share.
The airline improved its market share by three per cent from 46.9 to 49.9, revealed the domestic air traffic data released on Wednesday. Even as full service airline Jet Airways began grounding its aircraft in February, and March before temporarily suspending its operations on April 18, IndiGo has been aggressively expanding its operations.
Its market share which stood at 43.54 per cent in February leapfrogged to 46.9 per cent in March, and 49.9 per cent in April, showed the data released by Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Intense competition to have the upper hand continued between Air India, and low cost carrier Spicejet. Spicejet had overtaken Air India in market shares at the start of 2019, logging 13.3 per cent to Air India’s 12.2 per cent.
In April, Air India, which now has a new Chairman and Managing Director in Ashwani Lohani, has regained its lead and clocked 13.9 per cent compared with Spicejet’s 13.1 per cent March to 10.8 per cent. Cash-strapped Jet Airways had 11.9 per cent of the market share in January 2019 which shrank to 10 per cent in February, and 4.6 per cent in March. In April, its market share sank to 0.8 per cent as the operations ceased.
