KSRTC reduces Flybus routes as UDAN soars

Bengaluru: Better regional air connectivity after the central government’s UDAN push has hit the soaring ambitions of a bus facility run by KSRTC. A number of Flybus services, from the Kempegowda International Airport to various cities and towns in South India, have been discontinued because of poor patronage.
KSRTC has put on hold an expansion plan for the Flybus, which took off six years ago and became popular among travellers looking for direct connectivity to urban centres that were earlier not on the country’s aviation map.

Under UDAN, low-cost airlines have started flying to these places, providing bus and train travellers a speedier alternative at affordable rates. “Flybus services are seeing low occupancy in most cities where flights have begun under UDAN. Take the case of Tirupati in Andhra; there are several daily flights to the temple town. Many people now prefer flights over buses,” a senior KSRTC official said. “We have now decided to focus on towns which don’t have airports.”

The transport corporation has scrapped Flybus services from KIA to Mangaluru, Coimbatore, Salem and Tirupati. It has decided not to extend services to Kannur, Kozhikode and Ooty. Nine of the 15 Flybuses currently in operation make trips to Mysuru, and two each to Madikeri, Kundapur and Manipal.
