The crisis-hit Jet Airways has not only affected thousands of its employees but also hit the export of mangoes to foreign countries.
With Jet grounding its 120-strong fleet following financial trouble, other airlines have increased their cargo rates, due to which the Hapus (Alphonso) mango producers are faced with a difficult task of exporting the king of fruits, only because the cargo flights of Jet that they had booked their export on, will no longer fly.
This unusual crisis may be good news if it increases the availability of the mangoes in the domestic market, but not for mango growers who have to bear the brunt of this.
Jet Airways had started a cargo service with France's KLM company through which fruits and vegetables were exported on a large scale. Through the same service, around 50 to 60 tonnes of mangoes were exported in the month of May. However, with Jet Airways now grounded, export of the Alphonso has also been hit.
"When Jet services were functioning, nearly 200 tonnes of different types of mangoes were exported every day. However, since the services have stopped, other airlines have increased their rates by 15 to 20 per cent. The national carrier Air India has increased maximum export cost, due to which exporters have reduced the export quantity. They daily export has now fallen to 90 tonnes," said major exporter Sanjay Pansare.
