Air India has announced it has no plans to introduce a London-Amritsar direct flight, leaving Punjabi passengers disappointed and feeling neglected. The only direct route they had between the holy city and Britain was cancelled in February.
Since February, Punjabi flyers have been heavily inconvenienced and had to take indirect routes via the Middle East or Delhi to travel between Amritsar and the UK. The only direct scheduled flight between the UK and Amritsar, the thrice-weekly Birmingham Amritsar Air India flight, stopped completely in February after Pakistan closed its airspace in response to India's air strikes on militant bases in Pakistan. The closure of the airspace has forced all airlines to take longer routes around Pakistan.
