Porbandar Airport to see base expansion to encourage tourism to Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace

Porbandar is one of the most prominent cities of Gujarat. With that in mind, the Gujarat government has taken a call to expand Porbandar Airport to encourage tourism prospects and support security agencies in better landing of helicopters and aeroplanes.

As per an official release, the decision was taken at a meeting held on Tuesday, between CM Vijay Rupani and Guruprasad Mohapatra, Chairman of Airports Authority of India, in Gandhinagar.

The expansion has been planned to considerably increase the passenger capacity of the airport. This would also be helpful for the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy, involved in promoting India’s maritime interests.
What makes Porbandar a popular place is the fact that it is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the Father of the Nation. Having good air connectivity to the city will further improve tourism prospects in the future. According to the plan, the existing runway shall be expanded to 2600 m from the current 1372 m. This expansion will allow the Coast Guard and Indian Navy to land their aeroplanes and helicopters at the airport.
