Air India to fly Amritsar-Delhi-Toronto thrice a week from September 27: Hardeep Singh Puri

New Delhi: Air India will start a nonstop service between Delhi and Toronto from this September. Aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday tweeted: “Delighted to announce the commencement of a thrice weekly Air India flight between Sri Amritsar Sahib and Canada. The Amritsar-Delhi-Toronto flight will commence on the occasion of World Tourism Day on September 27, 2019.”
Jet Airways, which suspended operations this April, used to fly to Toronto. Air India recently got a long-grounded Boeing 777 back into service and will again connect Canada to India with an Indian carrier.
“I am glad I was able to help in fulfilling this long pending demand of citizens of Guru Nagri (Amritsar) and devotees who travel from North Americas to pay obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib, Durgiyana Mandir & other holy places. This flight will mark an auspicious beginning of a new journey,” Puri tweeted. The minister’s announcement won applause from Twitterati for keeping his commitment to Amritsar despite losing the Lok Sabha from there.
At present Air Canada is the only airline with direct flights between India and Canada. The Canadian airline has a daily on Delhi-Vancouver and Delhi-Toronto. However, its Delhi-Toronto flight is suspended between June 14 and August 1 due to continued closure of Pakistan airspace. United’s Delhi-Newark daily direct is also suspended since early April for the same reason is now expected to resume on July 2.
