Direct flights to Ahmedabad from Coimbatore likely by year-end

Coimbatore: In would could be a huge relief to the Gujarati community and the cotton traders in the city, sources with the aviation ministry on Thursday confirmed that at least two airlines have shown interest in starting flights from the city to Ahmedabad or Surat by the year-end. They said both the airlines had studied passenger traffic data and were satisfied with the figures.
Airport authorities said the Air India and the IndiGo airlines were the players that have expressed interest in starting flights to Ahmedabad. “While representatives of the Indigo have spoken about the possibilities and opportunities to us, the Air India has approached its superiors with the data. With the International Air Transport Association data looking positive, we are confident that the flights will come through soon,” an official said.
Girija, Air India station manager for Coimbatore, too confirmed they were discussing the options of starting a flight to Ahmedabad. “There is a solid possibility for the flight to get introduced by the year-end.”
This is likely to be a huge relief for the strong Gujarati, cotton and textile traders in the district. “The North Indian community has been demanding a direct flight to Ahmedabad and Surat for years now. Besides them, many traders in the textile industry also regularly travel to Gujarat for business,” Vanitha Mohan, vice-chairperson of Kongu Global Forum, had said in an earlier interaction.
