Vizianagaram: The State government is likely to review tender process of Bhogapuram international airport, according to highly placed sources. As the new government made it clear that it would review all ‘controversial’ tenders and contracts, the officials concerned have reportedly looked into the issue of international airport proposed at Bhogapuram of Vizianagaram district.
During election campaign and padayatra, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and several YSRCP leaders alleged the then TDP government had cancelled initial tender to benefit private companies.
Airports Authority of India had emerged winner by offering 30.2% revenue share. GMR Group was the second highest bidder by offering 21.6% share.
However, Chandrababu Naidu government cancelled the entire process in January, 2018 and called for fresh tenders with new rules and regulations.
A new clause was included and under which the companies which wanted to construct the airport project should have experience in real estate development. AAI which constructed many airports in India could not participate in the fresh tender process with new rules as it did not have experience in real estate activities.
Instead of revenue share method, the government asked the bidders to pay fee as per passenger traffic. GMR which emerged winner offered ₹303 per passenger and GVK Group offered ₹202 per passenger. Reliance Airport Developers, Essel Infraprojects, Fairfast India Holdings, National Investment and Infrastructure Fund also participated in the process. The then Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu laid foundation stone for the airport in the second week of February, 2019.
Although he formally initiated the process, the future of the project hangs in balance with the change of government and priorities of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government.
“Mr. Jagan is very particular about transparency in tender process in all projects.
