Gold seized at Mangaluru airport

Mangaluru : Customs at Mangaluru International Airport on Tuesday seized gold from a passenger, the third seizure in three days.
The catch was 349.480 gm of gold of 24-carat purity valued at Rs 12.06 lakh from a passenger who arrived from Dubai on board Air India Express flight IX814. The gold (mercury coated) was concealed in Tiger balm caps and in the basement of talcum powder containers, making it a new modus operandi for gold smugglers trying to evade duty.
Customs on Monday had seized 239.860gms of gold worth Rs 8.16 lakh from a woman who arrived from Abu Dhabi by Air India Express flight IX816. The woman had concealed the gold that included three crude gold chains and four crude gold bangles under the burkha she wore.
