Land regn around Sholavaram airstrip halted

Chennai: Registration of properties in four suburban pockets around Sholavaram airstrip has been freezed following a complaint by the Indian Air Force over encroachment of defence land. However, the move has affected genuine landowners residing in the four localities. Their properties have also been brought under the ambit of blanket ban.
The development comes after the IAF began the process of retrieving encroached portions of land belonging to the airstrip in March. According to defence sources, the IAF wrote to the inspector general of registration seeking to stop registration of selected sub-divisions of 45 survey numbers in Alamathi, Attanthangal, Pammathukulam and Nallur that were part of airfield in April. In turn, the registration department went overboard and imposed a blanket ban on all the 45 survey numbers. A survey number will contain multiple sub-divisions. This has resulted in genuine landowners in these urbanised localities knocking at the doors of the IAF.
“Our intention was to stop further encroachment and freezing registration of illegally occupied land was a solution. But, the registration department issued a circular to ban land transactions on the entire survey numbers,” an IAF official said. In the wake of the ban, owners of properties, who did not encroach on the airstrip have also been hit, the official added.
So far, 55 acres of land under encroachment that housed farmhouses and shops has been retrieved. Verification of revenue documents by defence authorities revealed that an approach road of an educational institution fell within their peripheries. According to IAF sources, Gojan School of Business and Technology functioning on the vicinity of the airstrip has encroached upon 1.5km of road. However, a representative of the institution denied the allegations saying it was a common approach road used by shops in the neighbourhood. “The three acres land is not an encroachment and is used by people in the neighbourhood,” the representative said.
