Main accused in gold smuggling racket surrenders

Thiruvananthapuram: The main accused in gold seizure case at Trivandrum International Airport, advocate Biju M, surrendered before directorate of revenue intelligence on Friday. He surrendered at DRI office, Kochi, after the high court bench directed him to surrender during the hearing of his anticipatory bail.
In the investigation conducted by DRI, it was found that Biju had arranged Sunil Kumar M, a former KSRTC conductor and Sareena Shaji, who runs a beauty parlour in Dubai, as carriers to smuggle 25kg from Dubai, which was seized at the airport on May 13. After the seizure, Biju went absconding and had moved anticipatory bail plea at the high court.
“He was directed by the high court to surrender before 10am on Friday and he turned up at DRI office in the morning. He is being questioned. He will be arrested after his statement is recorded,” said a DRI official.

DRI officers have also launched search for Mohammed Ali, director of PPM Chains, who bought the gold smuggled by the gang.
“It was found that the Biju handed over gold smuggled by carriers to Mohammed Ali, who owns a jewellery shop. He is absconding and a search was conducted at his house in Kozhikode,” DRI officials added.
