Mayor starts petition for direct flight from Birmingham to Mumbai

Mayor Andy Street has started a petition for a new direct flight between Birmingham and Mumbai.

The petition, which can be found on popular petition website change.org, urges members of the public to support Birmingham Airport's attempts to establish the new route.

Representatives of the airport are due to fly to India in the near-future to discuss the proposals, and Mr Street believes a petition from residents of the West Midlands would help to strengthen their hand.

At the time of publishing, the petition has 1,158 signatures.
Writing on the change.org website, the mayor said: "The Midlands serves a large Indian community of nearly 500,000, with significant populations in Birmingham, Leicester, Northampton, Nottingham, Sandwell and Wolverhampton .

"I am really pleased there is an Air India flight to Delhi from Birmingham but if people need to go to Mumbai they have to travel to Heathrow.
