New airport terminal likely by end of 2020

Pune: The new terminal building of the city airport might get ready and integrated with the existing facility by the end of 2020.
The construction of the new terminal and its integration with the existing building in Lohegaon was supposed to be completed by early 2021 at a cost of Rs408 crore. Once this happens, the authorities can tide over the problem of over-crowding at the airport.

During a recent meeting, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said the new building should be completed at least two-three months before the expected completion date, airport sources said.

“The authorities admitted that over-crowding was becoming an everyday affair at the airport with the facility witnessing more flights and footfall. The completion of the new building before the deadline is important. The work is on in full swing,” a source said.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier told TOI that completion of the project before the expected completion date was expected.

The tender for the building construction was awarded to Mumbai-based ITD Cementation in September last year with a 30-month deadline ending March 2021. But after the recent directive, the building is expected to be ready by December 2020. Aegis India, which is originally a France-based company, has been appointed the consultant for the project.

The sources said crowd management at the airport was becoming a major challenge for the authorities with the number of flights and passengers soaring. “The current space is inadequate. This was one of the reasons to shift the public transport vehicles out of the airport premises. We are now focusing on early completion of the project,” a source told TOI.
