AAI meets stakeholders to discuss opening of integrated terminal

Chennai: The new integrated terminal at Chennai airport is a year from completion — it’s scheduled for June 2020 — but the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already started groundwork to shift international operations there.
The new building is coming up in the space between the existing domestic and international terminals where the old domestic terminal stood. Excavation and foundation work are going on. The plan is to shift international arrivals there from the old building used now.
A senior AAI official said representatives of airlines, immigration officials, customs, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) were given a presentation about the facilities that would be available at the new building and the space they would get to operate international arrivals and departures.
“The discussion is to prepare them to plan for shifting so that they will be able to start functioning from the new terminal without any hassle. The space to be allotted, location of the offices, check-in counters, passenger flow and other details were explained,” he added.
“We have started the process early because suggestions by airlines can also be incorporated. There were complaints that needs of airlines were not taken into consideration during construction of the steel and glass domestic and international terminals that were commissioned in 2013,” he said.
