AAI proposes funding of AC cabins at Asarwa fish market

Ahmedabad: In an effort to curb the bird strikes and enhance safety of aircraft moving in and out of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in Ahmedabad, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has proposed to the civic body to fund the setting up of air-conditioned cabins at the fish market, located under Chamunda Bridge in Asarwa area of the city. The bridge falls in the funnel area of the SVPI Airport, which means it is along the take-off and landing route of the aircraft. AAI alleged that even as the proposal – aimed at keeping birds at bay by preventing sale of fish in the open – had been put forth by the AAI two months ago, the project continues to await approval from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
AMC officials have however refuted AAI’s claims stating that the project is very much under consideration and the execution is likely to begin in another month.

Elaborating about the proposal, Manoj Gangal, SVPI airport director, said, “Fishes are sold in an open space on the road along Chamunda bridge, which falls in the funnel area of the SVPI Airport. This attracts birds, which pose a risk to the aircraft.”
Gangal said, “We have proposed to fund the project of setting up glass, air-conditioned cabins to keep fish. AAI has earmarked a fund for the same and once AMC approves the proposal, the project can be funded by AAI.”
